Discovering High Tea at Chateau Mon Desir: A Mauritian Delight

31 December 2022

High tea is more than a meal; it’s an experience that transcends borders. Having savoured this tradition in locales as diverse as Taiwan and Mauritius, each with its unique culinary flair, I recently found myself at Chateau Mon Desir on the picturesque island of Mauritius, bidding farewell to 2022 in the most enchanting way possible.

As we approached the chateau, its grandeur was immediately apparent, framed by vibrant gardens adorned with crimson flamboyant trees. Ascending a step of stairs, we entered the grand dining room, where a meticulously set table awaited us, complete with gleaming crockery and a welcoming ambiance.

Our attentive waiter promptly served us Mauritius’ famed tea, boasting flavors ranging from fruity to spicy, each sip a testament to the island’s rich culinary heritage. Soon, a delectable array of food, including freshly baked scones, was presented, enhancing the fairy tale setting of our chateau experience.

Following our indulgent high tea, we wandered through the chateau’s gardens, a veritable paradise boasting a tranquil lake, cascading waterfall, and lush tropical foliage. Rustic benches nestled among the flora offered moments of serene contemplation, while a quaint wooden bridge and historic mill added to the charm.

Beyond its culinary delights, Mauritius captivates with its natural beauty and cultural tapestry. Nestled in the Indian Ocean, this tropical gem is a mosaic of influences—from Dutch and French colonial legacies to vibrant African, European, Chinese, and Indian communities. The island’s inland treasures, from majestic mountains and verdant valleys to hidden gorges and pristine waterfalls, beckon adventurers seeking to explore beyond the sun-kissed beaches and luxurious resorts.

If you find yourself in Mauritius, a visit to Chateau Mon Desir for high tea is a must-do experience, offering a taste of elegance and the island’s soul in every delightful bite and serene garden stroll.
