A Royal High Tea at Warwick Castle, England – September 2024

Our recent travels took us to both London and Paris, but nothing could quite compare to the memorable experience of enjoying a quintessentially British tradition in the heart of England – a Royal High Tea at Warwick Castle. What could be more fitting than indulging in this classic custom at a historic castle, where the tradition itself first took root?

While in Paris, we relished afternoon tea at the renowned Angelina Salon de Thé and Café Malongo, delighting in French patisseries, decadent hot chocolate, and aromatic coffee sourced from Ethiopia. However, the pinnacle of our tea tour was undoubtedly the High Tea at Warwick Castle, which provided a perfect blend of history, luxury, and culinary indulgence.

Although a gentle rain drizzled over Warwick on that day, it did little to dampen our spirits. The high tea was served in a modern, purpose-built venue located within the castle grounds. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the sight of exquisite teapots and cups, their vibrant colours adding a touch of glamour to the entire experience.

We selected a refreshing peppermint tea and the quintessential English breakfast tea – both of which were smooth and delicate on the palate. A glass of crisp prosecco rounded out the experience, making it feel like a true celebration.

The High Tea spread was nothing short of magnificent. We were treated to an array of savoury sandwiches, including cucumber, ham, egg, and smoked salmon, alongside mini quiches bursting with flavour. But the real stars of the show were the scones. Served with not just jam and clotted cream, but also fresh, creamy butter, they were absolutely divine.

The sweet offerings were generous, and I wouldn’t describe them as petit fours. These were full-sized patisseries, each one a masterpiece in its own right. Among the highlights were a light and fluffy Victoria sponge cake, rich chocolate cake, zesty berry mousse with lemon, delicate lemon profiteroles, and a raspberry tart with a refreshing lemon twist. Every item was impeccably fresh and beautifully crafted, earning a well-deserved rating.

After our indulgent tea, we wandered through the stunning gardens of the castle. Vibrant flowers, cascading fountain, and scenic walking paths made it a perfect post-tea stroll. We then ventured inside the castle itself, where we learned about its fascinating history, including the lavish parties hosted by the English kings and queens throughout the centuries.

Warwick Castle’s origins date back to the year 815, when its foundations were first laid by King Alfred the Great. Over the centuries, the castle evolved, with William the Conqueror building the motte-and-bailey structure that stands on the site today. The oldest part of the castle – a mound – is still visible, offering a striking glimpse into its medieval past. Warwick Castle has seen countless royal residents, including King Henry VIII, who stayed there briefly. The grand ballroom, with its awe-inspiring ceilings and intricate detailing, continues to impress visitors, much like it did for the royal guests who once danced beneath its ornate arches.

The entire experience was deserving of a 9.5/10 rating. The beautiful surroundings, the rich history of the castle, and, of course, the indulgent high tea made it a memorable and delightful afternoon. If you’re planning a trip to England, I highly recommend adding Warwickshire to your itinerary – you won’t be disappointed!
